If you step into Everlan of Johnson City on a Mahjong night, you’ll probably hear Alice Marshall’s laugh before you spot her at the table, surrounded by friends she’s played with for three decades. At ninety years young, Alice is proof that a love of learning and community can carry you through every season of life.
Born in Greene County, Tennessee, Alice’s story began in the rolling hills of East Tennessee. After finishing high school, she set her sights on East Tennessee State University, earning a degree in Education. Teaching became her calling, and she spent the early years of her career guiding students in Hawkins and Greene Counties, helping them find their footing in the world.
Life had more adventures in store. Alice met Corny, the man who’d become her husband, and the pair moved west to Olympia, Washington. There, while Corny served in the Army, Alice wore two hats: librarian and eighth grade teacher at the local high school on base. It was a chapter filled with new experiences, but after Corny’s retirement, Tennessee called them home.
Back in Johnson City, Alice and Corny started their family, and Alice traded the classroom for the busy, unpredictable world of parenting. She raised their two children, John and Courtney, while Corny built a career as a developer and contractor of both commercial and residential properties. Even with her hands full at home, Alice’s days rarely slowed down—she poured her heart into local clubs and volunteer organizations, always finding ways to give back.
Family remains the center of Alice’s world. She’s a proud grandmother to four and a great-grandmother to three, cherishing every moment she gets to spend with them.
Life at Everlan keeps Alice as busy as she likes. Weekly Mahjong games with her longtime friends are a highlight, and she still finds time for bridge and her lifelong passion—watching tennis and cheering on her favorite players.
Alice Marshall’s story is one of curiosity, resilience, and connection. Whether she’s at the game table or celebrating with family, she brings warmth and kindness wherever she goes. Everlan is grateful to have her, and there are surely more stories—and more laughter—ahead.
